Finding Funds
in Your Community
Among the possible local resources for funding or grants to reduce
youth violence and gang activity in your community are those found in the Yellow Pages under Social Service and Welfare Organizations. In
addition, local business organizations (i.e., Rotary, Lions, Sertoma) and
faith
institutions (individual churches or church organizations such as a Council of
Churches) may have funds available for your project. If none of them have funds available, perhaps they can put you in touch with an
organization in town that does. If you network aggressively you are likely to
find some funding.

Funding Agencies
Gathering
the Data
When applying for grants and funding, granting agencies typically expect
to see data which supports applicants' claims for support. The following are
data sites which may provide some of the data you may need or give you an
idea of the kind of data you could collect and submit. You may also find the
data of comparative use as, for example, you compare the rate of child abuse
in your neighborhood or community with rates found in other/similar communities.

1 - Characteristics
of the criminal justice systems:
Presents data on the number and types of
criminal justice agencies and employees, criminal justice
expenditures, workload of agency personnel, and State-by-State
statutory information.

criminal justice-related topics:
Presents the results of nationwide public
opinion polls on such matters as fear of victimization, the
death penalty, gun control, drug use, and ratings of law
enforcement and judicial system performance.

Presents data from several indicators of the
extent of illegal activities. These surveys of individuals and
households that may have been victims of crime, proportions of
persons reporting that they have used various drugs or
participated in other illegal activities, and law enforcement
agency counts of offenses reported to them.

4 - Characteristics and distribution
of persons arrested:
Includes tabulations of arrestees by age, sex, race, and
geographic area; proportions of known crimes cleared by arrests;
and counts of illegal goods and assets seized.

Presents data on the number of juveniles and adults processed
through the courts and on the characteristics, dispositions, and
sentences of defendants.
