Dr. Larkin's specialties are the sociology of the family and the sociology of childhood.

I have found Into the Abyss to be an incredibly valuable source of information. These volumes provide both a personal account of Dr. Carlie's extensive experience researching street gangs and a tool to access hundreds of research reports on this subject.

I am currently using Into the Abyss as a research aid for students in two of my courses. It allows them to access a broad array of material on the Internet. I strongly recommend Into the Abyss to other faculty as a resource for their students and to anyone interested in the world of street gangs.

I was reading Into the Abyss and ... wanted to share with you that you did a great job in writing such a comprehensive look at gangs. Well researched and reasoned and supported both by facts and logic.

I have just spent the past several hours quickly going though your book on line. It is wonderful and I will now start reading again to digest all that you have written. Based on what I have already seen and read, I have written a review for the book (see below). I hope it does justice to such an outstanding work.

The ultimate in gang identification resources and information can be summed up in three words - “Into The Abyss.”  Dr. Carlie has created what will probably become known as the gang identification “bible” for those of us who are in the field of gang identification, as well as those who need, or want to learn more about gangs. I am honored that Dr. Carlie chose to include my web site, Gangs OR Us, and one of its pages - "Gang Slang" - as recommended sources for additional gang information.

I am grateful to you for including my work in your book and I am going to include a link to the book, with an appropriate introduction, on my website. I receive between 6K and 8K page visits each day, so I am sure there will be many others who will have the opportunity to see and learn from your efforts.

Look for When Brotherhood Leads to Violence: Inmate Gangs in the Texas Prisons, a new book be written by Dr. Beth Pelz and Terry Pelz.

I think we've emailed each other a time or two over the years regarding gangs. In any event, Bob Walker at Gangs Or Us called me this afternoon and brought your site to my attention. I must say that I'm extremely impressed with the site. You have put a lot of work into it and should be very proud. It is the most comprehensive gang site to date. Some years back, I started Bob's web site for him and since he has taken it over, he too, has polished and produced one of the best on the web.

Congratulations and good luck.

From: Lt. Kevin Routh, Section Commander, Springfield (Missouri) Police Department

I want to compliment Dr. Carlie on one of the best works I have seen published in the area of "Gangs". I spent several years investigating and supervising gang investigations and would have appreciated the opportunity to see a publication like this early in my career.

Dr. Carlie's easy to follow, conversational text with instant links to additional information and publications puts a phenomenal tool at your fingertips. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about gangs.

I am very impressed with your living book. It could have great applications in the field of medicine. Getting information distributed in a usable form in a timely fashion has been a significant challenge throughout the history of our profession.

From: Sgt. Brian Been, Cedar Rapids (IA) Police Department

Into the Abyss appears to be one of the most thorough and detailed writings on gangs I have seen. Thanks for a great book!
