Mike Carlie was born in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1944.
He attended the University of Missouri (Columbia) where he received
a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1966 and a Master of Arts in 1967. Both degrees were in sociology.
In 1967 Dr. Carlie received a scholarship from the Midwest Center for Social
Research on Aging to attend Washington University (St. Louis) where he
received a Ph.D. in sociology in 1970.
Since that time Dr. Carlie has taught at the University of Missouri in St.
Louis, Ball State University (Muncie, IN), and at Southwest Missouri State
University (Springfield, MO), where he is currently a professor of sociology and criminal justice in the Department of Sociology
and Anthropology.

Since 1970 Dr. Carlie has been conducting research and
teaching a variety of courses on such topics as
corrections, law enforcement, youth gangs, capital punishment, crime and the
media, and a course which introduces students to the both the juvenile- and
criminal justice systems in the United States.
He has served as a consultant to the Departments of Corrections in
Indiana and Missouri, as President of the Board of several group homes for
delinquent youth, as a member of the United States Department of Justice's
Criminal Justice Planning Agency, and spent six years teaching inside a
state penitentiary.
Dr. Carlie is an author, lecturer, guest speaker, and advisor, and currently serves on a variety of criminal justice-related community
